How do I check a download with SHA-256?

Choose the file, then paste the SHA-256 value the website lists next to it. If they match, the file is exactly the one the website published. A whole line from a SHA256SUMS file works too.

What is the difference between SHA-256 and SHA-512?

Both are safe. SHA-512 gives a longer hash and can be a little faster on 64-bit computers; SHA-256 is the one most websites list.
