Questions

Is the text really gone?

Yes. Each page with something blacked out is redrawn as a picture with the black boxes painted on, so the text, pictures and drawings under them are no longer in the file and can't be copied or searched. Pages with nothing to hide are kept as they were. The PDF's title, author, bookmarks, attachments and form are left out too, since they can repeat what you hid.

Can I still select the text on a redacted page?

Not on the pages that had something blacked out, because they become pictures. Run OCR PDF on the result if you need that text searchable again; what was blacked out stays hidden.

What about scanned PDFs?

A scan has no text to search, so words and details won't be found. Draw boxes over what to hide, or make the PDF searchable with OCR PDF first and then redact it.

Which details can it find by itself?

Email addresses, phone numbers (Indian mobiles and numbers written with a country code), PAN numbers, Aadhaar numbers and payment card numbers. Check the result before you share it.

Is Redact PDF free?

It is included with our paid plans. A free account can try it a few times a month, and every paid plan includes more. Plans cost less than most.

What happens to my files?

Your uploads are deleted as soon as the job finishes. The file we make is deleted after an hour, or straight away if you press Delete now. We don't look at your files or keep copies.

Do I need to install anything?

No. It works in the browser on any computer, tablet or phone.

Can I use Redact PDF from my own code?

Yes. Every tool is also an API endpoint. Send your files to POST /v1/redact-pdf with an API key from your Account page, then download the result when the job is done.
